Hello,
I am using Ubuntu 11.10, Gnome 3 shell. In "System settings" I configured two keyboard layouts, Russian and English, and "Alt+Shift" combination to switch layouts. This worked for years without any problems, in Gnome 2, Gnome 3, and in Unity. Yesterday keyboard indicator icon dissappeared from Gnome panel, and I cannot switch keyboard from English to Russian anymore, while "System Settings" "Keyboard Layout" displays two layouts. First I thought it was Gnome 3 problem, switched to Unity session, but the problem persists.

How to re-store keyboard indicator ?

Try enabling the log-in window: relog and there you should be able to choose which keyboard layout to use for the session, try to choose the non-default one and it should put the keyboard indicator back to the panel. This way worked for me.

I have installed 6 different distros with different desktop environments, and each one has given me problems with keyboard layout switchings. :D
