Inaccessible Ubuntu on XP laptop

Hi

I was adjusting my installation in December & drinking red wine at the same time. Uh-oh

Having changed my password I promptly forgot the new one. Then I applied an update over the functioning dual boot system.

Next I logged out of Linux and booted into windows... only to find that Linux has disappeared but the size of my hdd seems to have diminished.

Even if, and it' s a big iff, if I can get the choice of OS up, I cannot now log in to linux.

Is there any work-around for this dilemma please, Ubuntu experts?

OH YES, I forgot to mention,

I had already used up my Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free card in reinstalling and accessing the OS using an ISO disc.
