Still keeping it simple on Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome Shell. Just discovered Libreoffice's batch .pdf conversion from terminal, which indirectly means I don't have to use MS Office anymore. Happies.

Faenza icons, Radiamentary GTK, Elegance Shell (slightly modified.) (Yes, the combination looks exactly like an iPad. I'm comfortable with that.)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17749392/Screenshots/2012-02-03/simplethumb.png (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17749392/Screenshots/2012-02-03/simple.png)

Not pictured, 1024x768 external display that's basically always plugged in if I'm at home and indoors, very useful for grading and other document stuff as well as for movies while surfing. I love Gnome Shell's handling of the external monitor as its own weird little workspace.

Edit: The Tomboy Notes icon is actually BasKet Notes, but I just like the sticky-pad graphic.

The icon set is Faenza-Ambiance. To get it run in a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiheum/equinox && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install faenza-icon-theme --assume-yes

To change the dash icon go to /usr/share/unity/4/ and replace the launcher_bfb.png with the one you want. I used the one from Faenza which is in /usr/share/icons/Faenza/places/48/

Why dont I get any tracks in Cmus?

In library view you see the artist, hit space to expand with the albums sorted chronologically and when you scroll to an album you'll see a tracklist on the right. :) Hit tab to focus the tracklist and scroll through the songs there.

Pro tips: Highlight a song or album or artist and hit y to add to the playlist view (3) to make a playlist with what you want to hear, or hit q to add to the queue view (4) where they go away after being played and then playback continues on the library or the playlist (depending on the mode). Use m and M to change modes (artist, album, all, library, playlist). And s and r for shuffle and repeat.

EDIT: Super Pro Tips: numbers 1 to 7 change views. View 7 has all the keybindings, dig them and see what you want to use. It takes several times to memorize the keys but once you do every single other way of navigating your music will feel clumsy and cumbersome.

If you have any other questions about cmus drop me a pm. :)

To anyone interested in trying this little wonder of a music player:

In ubuntu 11.10 there's a dependency problem. If you want to install cmus open a terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install cmus cmus-plugin-ffmpeg --no-install-recommends

Finally, I post a screenshot for February. This is my Ubuntu 11.04 running the KDE desktop. I have done a few major tweaks since last month's posts. I've upgraded to KDE 4.7 (Natty runs 4.6 by default), and also installed the Unity-like "Icon Tasks" plasmoid. Sure, I can run AWN in KDE, but it looks out of place in my Ubuntu's KDE desktop. So having a Unity-like launcher/task manager makes it to where I use the start menu much less. I like it so far, even if it is incomplete.

Click here (http://www.webupd8.org/2011/11/unity-like-launcher-for-kde-icon-tasks.html) for article on Icon Tasks and PPA or here (http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/?content=144808) for the source code.

On my laptop machine which is my main atm... Its actually really grown on me. I had to change the theme and icon setup and definitely shrink the size of the unity bar but after using for awhile with a laptop when you dont have a mouse you do get used to it. I did anyways.

My netbook runs Ubuntu 11.10, and uses the default Unity desktop. I have absolutely no problems with it, and I like running it. As for my desktop, I have Unity, Ubuntu Classic (GNOME 2), and KDE. I don't use Unity on it, but I use Ubuntu Classic (I have it set up a lot like Mac OS X) as my primary and KDE as my secondary.

Yes, I use and appreciate Unity as well... but it's still very difficult to take me away from GNOME 2.32 :D

The backgrounds are images in /usr/share/unity/4/ I don't remember which ones were they exactly but they're a bit obvious by the names and how they look. Open them and clear them in gimp (select all then clear) and then log out and back in. Don't forget to backup any files before making changes. DO NOT just delete them, unity will stop working.

I'm on Mac OS X right now. No Ubuntu setup at the moment, because I can't stand Unity (although whenever I do use it, it feels more an more comfortable for me...maybe some day). Also have a netbook running a slightly tweaked Pinguy OS, which I'll post a screenshot of soon. Pinguy may be replaced with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS running MATE soon, though...Pinguy has always been a tad too slow for my taste, and I miss the Classic Gnome experience on true Ubuntu.

The stuff on the borders of the image is my hidden windows.

Wallpaper is Delta energy 2 (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Delta-energy?content=146797).
Theme is just default Mac OS X color scheme with a hidden dock, plus Camouflage (http://camouflage.en.softonic.com/mac) to hide the desktop icons.

I also changed my AWN from the Mac OS X "3D" look to a curved look. However, I had to move the weather applet from AWN to my top panel... Very nice. I LOVE clearlooks. With the exception of the change of colors, and the added icons on the right of the System Menu, this is how I used to have Karmic set up :smile:

I remember Karmic! Killed my install of that version by accident one day while trying out the 3D cube desktop, (Intel graphics, lol.) and the screen went permanently blank. Could've fix it by finding the xorg.conf, but gave up on searching for it, and just stuck with the 8.04 LTS install I already had at the time.

I would get rid of some of those icons, but can't figure out how to remove the mail icon, for one. I'm too busy actually using my desktop to bother with that, so it pretty much stays there.

Surprisingly, the colors I usually go with are orange. (My favorite color and fruit!) But since the wallpaper was primarily cherry red, I changed the system colors to match.

Well, if you're talking minimalistic desktops, check mine out.

Holy crap that is minimal! You just beat standard OSX at that; can't even see a desktop icon. Makes me want to try faking an OSX theme for some reason. Would be easier than trying to skin Windows like that, jeez it took a lot of patches for that to look right on XP!

My Bodhi Linux desktop, running Enlightenment desktop environment/window manager. It's largely remained the same, other than changing wallpaper and adding a couple things to the dock. However, my "Mem" gadget stopped working right in the dock, so I removed it and put it on the lower corner of the desktop instead. I've shown it before, but my Firefox is running the default theme, but is using the "Leafy Fox" persona, which I think fits the Bodhi Linux theme very nicely :) I still like running Bodhi Linux and Enlightenment :) It's lightweight with lots of eye candy to boot. Isn't minimalism great?

Hadn't noticed the Arch button on the launcher in any of your previous screenshots. Is Unity available on Arch now? If so, how stable is it? Any major bugs or annoyances?

Ooh, I like that. Since not many themes distinguish the title bar from the panel, I wasn't sure it could be done quite like that. That removes one of my biggest aesthetic objections to most Unity setups and makes the whole thing feel a bit less claustrophobic. Looking good.

Glad you like it. Exactly what I was thinking on most themes. I wanted a bright theme but with a dark panel. Not so easy to find right now.

It has been a while since I've used 35mm film, none of my local photographic outlets do film any more. If I recall correctly, the shot was done by putting the camera on a tripod, and leaving the shutter open for something like a minute instead of the usual fraction of a second.

I used to love doing that on my old Nikon SLR... leaving the shutter open for long periods of time at night for excellent effects, although it required some very low speed film and a very tiny f-stop to do it.

It does suck that 35mm film is pretty much a dead art, with the newest Digital SLR's being just as good as their 35mm film counterparts... if not better.

Still, very nice wallpaper of a very nice shot :)

I used to love working with my old Pentax SLRs, whether scenery or wedding shots.. I have not used a new dSLR yet, but understand they are very capable. Film is still in use by die-hards and certain artistic types, but many are going to digital systems for the quick turn around and larger capacity (after all, even the tightest wound film can will only hold so many frames).

Love the nighttime skyline lisati!

I'd like to know how some of you guys recreate that OS X Menu bar with Gnome, it's the only thing I need to make my OS X theme look more complete and convincing! (Not changing the Login Screen and grub graphics, though.)

Also, I've already changed my usual theme! Usually happens every other day, but I enjoyed my last wallpaper longer than usual.

If you use ubuntu 10.04 to 11.04 it's indicator-appmenu, if you're using some other distro that still uses gnome2 then try to find gnome-globalmenu for your distro. Most of the appmenus you see here are because of unity.

I'd like to know how some of you guys recreate that OS X Menu bar with Gnome, it's the only thing I need to make my OS X theme look more complete and convincing! (Not changing the Login Screen and grub graphics, though.)

It's basically a lot of GNOME Panel applets (if you're using GNOME 2.x) on the top panel that can make your GNOME 2 look and act like Mac OS X. Mine has the Mint Menu on the left and the Indicator App Menu next to it. The Indicator App Menu comes pre-installed in Ubuntu 11.04 (both Unity and GNOME 2.32), but I believe you'd have to install it either from Ubuntu Software Center or from PPA in earlier Ubuntu versions. On the other end is my weather applet, workspaces applet, notifications, and indicator applet complete (system tray, time/date, social status, and shutdown, all in one applet).

For the Mac OS X style dock at the bottom, I deleted the bottom panel and replaced it with Avant Window Navigator, which can be found in the Ubuntu Software Center. Docky and Cairo Dock can be used as well. Whichever dock you use, make sure you use it as your combined task manager/launcher. It takes a little bit to work the top panel and the dock, but it's worth it.

And viperdvman, you've got to be the biggest Saria fan I've ever seen! That's a lot of desktop wallpapers with just her on them. Do you have that many machines with Linux on them or just a lot of WMs installed? :P

As far as Ocarina of Time fanfiction goes, LinkxSaria is my favorite pairing. This doesn't mean I dislike LinkxMalon or the expected LinkxZelda, I just like LinkxSaria the most. My recent Ubuntu KDE (note: not Kubuntu) screenshot has Princess Zelda in it (her Super Smash Brothers Brawl artwork). My most recent screenshot of my Ubuntu desktop has a LinkxZelda wallpaper... from Skyward Sword. And before Legend of Zelda, I've had Cadillacs, Corvette ZR1, and even Pokemon wallpapers, almost all of them custom-made by me. So I do spread my wallpapers out, according to my mood.

But yes, I am also a Saria fan :D

As for all my different screenshots... do I have that many machines with Linux on them? No. I have only 2 computers (Desktop and Netbook), both with Linux installed. My desktop actually has 2 distros installed alongside Windows: Ubuntu 11.04 and Bodhi Linux 1.3.0... and an unused partition for full-install trials. My netbook runs Ubuntu 11.10 alongside Windows.

Do I have a lot of WMs installed? Yes. My desktop runs Ubuntu 11.04, so it comes with Unity and Ubuntu Classic (GNOME 2.32) by default. I also have KDE 4.7.2 (from PPA) installed with a custom Oxygen Transparent theme and the Unity-like "Icon-only Tasks" plasmoid, both that had to be compiled from source.

My Bodhi Linux runs only its default Enlightenment desktop environment, set up to be very minimalist (as you've seen in my recent screenshots) yet very functional from its single dock. But that's what I like about Enlightenment... it's lightweight, but very customisable and with plenty of nice eye candy.

My netbook, however, is only running Unity. I don't have GNOME Shell or any other desktop environment installed on it. The netbook is one I like to keep one distro and one DE installed, unlike my desktop.

I need to take a lot at the software center then. Didn't know there were applets for that right under my nose!

Didn't know about the Avant Window Navigator, I'll have to take a look at that. I'm currently using Docky, and it's great, but there isn't an OS X style skin for it. Otherwise I'm in the love with it; it was the first Gnome dock that actually worked on one of my machines! I do have Cairo Dock installed, but haven't tried it out yet.

I do the same thing with my wallpapers! Just whatever fits my mood at the time, and I've had a few Corvette wallpapers myself; used to be a huge fan of the ZR1 models, and all the Stingrays too! I had posters of and books about Corvettes all over my walls like you wouldn't believe.

Wow, never even heard of Bodhi Linux; you're really giving me a lot of stuff to look up tonight! It's nice having multiple distros to work with on the same machine, and virtual partitions makes that so much easier. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to keep two Windows installs and three Ubuntu versions running on the same desktop machine. XD Multi-booting FTW!

Makes sense you wouldn't want that many OSs and WMs to maintain on a netbook, though. I'm a bit hesitant to tri-boot this new laptop because I'm too busy actually using it when it's on to do so, and all its recovery partitions are obstructive anyway. Wouldn't even worry about them if I had the Windows 7 install disc itself; installing Windows from scratch is so much faster.

I know this isn't much compared to most of the screenshots on this thread but I'm posting it as my way of saying I'm back on Linux after a two month enforced absence after the old PC died at the end of November.

Lovely new quad-core machine arrived a week ago today and I'm running Xubuntu 11.10 (64 bit) with the screen changed to be more Gnome2-ish. Added a few Screenlets on the right.

Apologies in advance for asking a supporty type question on this thread but I'm a bit new to this multiple core malarkey and so wondered why I can add Screenlet meters for five CPUs: 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4?? Apologies if that's a really dumb question.

Anyway, here's my screen.

You have a quad-core computer...so you have 4 CPUs. Thus the reason your screenlets show CPU usage for each of your four CPUs (1-4). The CPU 0 number is likely the most important one; it's the total CPU usage.

Thanks viper. Yes, it is as close as I have gotten to the look and feel of Mac OS X so far. We're only missing just one feature in the shell that would make it so: a global menubar across the top panel. Unity has that, but it hides. XFCE has the most stable global menubar, but its GUI is pretty conservative for my taste.

We do have a global menu extension for the shell, a pop-down menu. I'm waiting for someone to make it truly integrated with the top panel.

If someone can make a proper Mac/Unity style global menu for GNOME Shell, then I'd likely switch over :D

I'ld say, take a look at the source code. Only the JS file is important I believe.

The most important part of the code is the bottom: the enable and disable functions.

function init() {
let leftChildren = Main.panel._leftBox.get_children_list();
oldAppMenuButton = leftChildren[leftChildren.length - 1];
}

function enable() {
Main.panel._leftBox.remove_actor(oldAppMenuButton) ;

button = new MyAppMenuButton();
Main.panel._leftBox.add(button.actor);
Main.panel._menus.addMenu(button.menu);
}

function disable() {
Main.panel._menus.removeMenu(button.menu);
button.destroy();

Main.panel._leftBox.add(oldAppMenuButton);
}

There you see that the button is created with the MyAppMenuButton function. In that function, a lot of sub-buttons get added to that one. Instead of adding sub-buttons to the main one, it should be changed to adding buttons directly to the panel.

It's a bit of work to go through the entire code, but a good scripter (with some time) should be able to do it.

Really hard to get a "for idiots" guide to conky. The conky thread here is great to get a general idea, might seem a bit overwhelming in size but it is great. Other than that you just learn it as you go, start with a simple conkyrc you steal from someone, tinker with it, see what things do.

Linux Mint KDE edition is definitely a nice distro. I've tried it myself and have had some good experiences with it. However, what are the differences between Linux Mint KDE and Kubuntu... outside the Mint themes, Mint Software Center and pre-loaded apps and Flash and codecs? Outside of those differences, I really saw no difference between running Mint KDE 12 and Kubuntu 11.10.

I'd go with one of the greens in conky too, but that's excellent. You'd never know that's OB/tint2. Except for the big text that says, you know, Openbox. Kill your status bar in Nautilus too, unless you're partial to it.

Well thank you for the constructive criticism. :D I hadn't even paid any attention to conky this time. It just was there... And I am partial to the nautilus statusbar, not for its looks obviously, but because when I connect my phone or camera or psp I want to be able to see at a glance the free space on the device. I could disable it for the shot but meh.

When my CPU Percentage on Conky goes from a double digit to a single digit number, the conky resizes and it did that right as I took the screenshot.

That standalone compiz looks pretty good. I've seen a couple examples of using Compiz as a standalone WM. I know there are guides on either WebUpd8 or OMGUbuntu that show how, but I'm iffy about trying it myself.

How did you get transparent Titlebars and Window Borders? I really like that :)

It's very simple with emerald to make themes with transparent WB.
Compiz as a standalone WM is very quick and very functional.

My Slingshot Launcher, originally developed for Elementary OS. I'm not sure if it's in 0.1 Jupiter (I've never tried Elementary OS out), but I know it'll be in 0.2 Luna. I like it, but it's very hard to choose between this and AWN's main menu applet. The pros of Slingshot is that it lists all your apps in one big menu, kind of like Mac OS X's Launchpad, GNOME Shell's app menu, and Takeoff launcher for KDE plasma. It really completes the Mac OS X style desktop if that's what you're going for. However, the one con I've seen is it does not show the Ubuntu Software Center or anything found under the "Administration" menu.... even if you know the app found under that menu and try to type it in. That really sucks if Slingshot is the only menu you're using.

Note: My Slingshot menu is activated from my AWN dock. The top panel still uses the Mint Menu
