9.10 is well out of support. Anything but the LTS releases are only supported for eighteen months. 9.10 was released October 2009. I would try the current long-term support release 10.04 LTS as it is most stable and LTS releases are supported for three years. Starting with 12.04 LTS which will be released in April 2012 this will be for five years.

yep...but this still doesn't solve my problem....
i do like the gnome interface rather than the unity one and the computer i want to install ubuntu on has an LG tv screen ( when i tried to install ubuntu 10.04 - to complete the installation i rebooted and the screen said no signal ) - ubuntu 9.10 is the latest ubuntu release that my screen will accept...
so i guess u see why i am trying to install ubuntu 9.10 - and, mind you, it is a very nice release....
anyways if u can solve my problem or know how i could make my LG tv screen show ubuntu 10.04 i'd be grateful

thank you very much

The second and fourth link here might get you somewhere:

http://www.google.com.au/search?q=10.04+lg+screen+no+signal&btnG=Search&sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&site=&source=hp

Try setting the option 'nomodset' when installing 10.04 LTS. There are options at the bottom of the first screen of the LiveCD (the install CD). Think it is F4 or F6. You'll see it.

+1

Try Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with boot options :-)
