I just started using Ubuntu Server and am quite new to Linux/Ubuntu. I wanted to create a file server using old hardware.
The specs are as follows:
CPU: AMD 64 X2 4800+
Motherboard: Asus A8N-E
RAM: 2GB DDR2 800
HDD1: PATA 120GB
HDD2: PATA 160GB
HDD3: SATA 160GB
HDD4: SATA 250GB
GRAPHICS: NVidia GeForce 8600 GTS
The construction and installation went smoothly enough. The next thing I wanted to do was to make the computer as quiet as possible. So I installed lm-sensors and enabled AMD QCool in the bios.
When I restarted the server the CPU fan dropped to 1100 rpm ( down from 3200rpm) and the CPU clock dropped to 1GHz (down from 2.4GHz)
BUT the system is very loud mainly due to the chipset fan (running at 7000 rpm) and the Nvidia graphics card fan at 100%.
I updated the graphics card drivers by installing the Nvidia ones using the following steps
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
I also installed xfce. When i started it the video card fan dropped to 30% and the noise was reduced. But when I logged out of xfce the fan revved up to 100% and the noise was back again.
So my questions are as follows:
How do i make sure that the Nvidia driver are loaded when I am in the CLI ? i do not want to start xfce every time.
How do I manage the speed of the chipset fan?
Thank you for your time with this. And I apologize if my post is very long... It's all due to my noobness :D
