hi,
i have tried over 15 different distros till now (including ubuntu 10.04 LTS, ubuntu 11.10 net install and ubuntu 11.04 net install). the only one that actually worked was 10.04 LTS that i requested from ubuntu a long time ago. My desktop is old, its specs are:

512 mb ati radeon hd 3450 graphics
3 gb ddr2 RAM
20 + 80 gb storage
intel pentium 4 (ht) 3.0 ghz processor

i've tried a few lightweight distributions like puppy linux (racy puppy), xubuntu (11.10), lubuntu(11.10), but all of them fail during the installation.
i observed that, a similar problem occurred for all the ubuntu derivatives (like the ones mentioned above, except for 10.04). after i pressed install on the menu which you get after pressing Esc on the purple screen, i just got a blank screen and nothing was happening, even the cd drive light was not flickering. the same thing happened to xubuntu and lubuntu as well.
While trying to install linux mint 12, arch linux and backtrack, the installation always stopped at the line:

ACPI: power button [PWRF]

when i tried puppy, the installation stopped at

loading kernel modules

quite surprisingly, even after all these errors, 10.04 LTS always installs without a hitch, i tried upgrading it to 11.10, everything was normal till 11.04. when i restarted after the upgrade to 11.10, i would just get a purple screen, and the boot process wouldn't proceed beyond that.

i would be happy if i can run 11.10, or if the problem is found.
any help is greatly appreciated,
thanks in advance :)
