If anyone cares...

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2759

I am willing to try it. I am not so into Linux biggotry that I am going to deny it without using it. It is free, so I'll give it a shot.

Windows has good features. Linux has good features. Apple has good features.

So experiment away! And, of course, if you want to dog it, come back to the thread and have at it!

Sorry, Windoz is like cigarettes. I'm not into bigotry, its just after getting rid of them the last thing I want is try another.

Heh, heh...

I am not excited at all. I follow the previews and CTP builds and I don't see much that interests me. However, if I am going to dog it, I want to make it at least a good, educated thrashing.

I guess this is big-time beta still, and even the users who have it already (it was released to MSDN subscribers two weeks ago) say it is still buggy as hell. Debug mode is on in the background so it is said to be horribly laggy at all times.

Gah, but I still feel like I must try it! The horrible pangs of a geek... ](*,)

Would it be possible to install it on Vmware without burning it to a DVD?
Then I might give it a go :)

I hope so! I really don't want to get rid of a perfect system just to try the beta...

Anyone with more experience able to help?

Keeps quitting for me to, have to resume (using Opera) I'm not gonna start XP just to use their download manager. Not gonna let my wintendo (no fw or antivirus) be exposed to the frightening internet more then absolutetly necessary.

Edit: They should offer it as a torrent. Ah well guess they're not that into torrent for some reason ;D

Umm... what will happen to my existing XP installation? Haven't they developed any technology that could let people try out their betas without overwriting the existing system? I guess they've never heard of Live CD/DVDs. But then again, 3GBs...

I'm not sure I'd want to use XP long-term, though (except for gaming), specially after reading this article: http://news.com.com/2100-1016_3-6081286.html?part=rss&tag=6081286&subj=news.

This build has been out on the torrent sites for about two weeks now. Every little turd from crap "news" sites like neowin is probably saturating the download links so they can be the first to fap-fap themselves into a coma over the gaudy transparency and pretty-pretty icons. I'd forget about official links for at least a few days.

And yes, it installs fine in vmware.

They should, although they don't like GPL stuff, so they would have to make their own LiveCD method. Just like the icons, they have a 192x192 PNG for scalable use, and they call it a huge advance. Linux has been using PNG for years.

You don't have to download Vista. In Windows XP, go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Promt. You will see something like a Linux terminal (only useless). Type this command:

psuedo wga update
pseudo vista-upgrade

Microsoft originally said that 256mb ram would be enough, now with Beta 2 they have doubled this to 512mb ram. In one swift stroke they have lost millions of dollars in potential upgrades from Windows users who must have the latest version but only have 256mb ram and no way to increase it.

I may order the DVD just out of spite. I can't run the damn thing anyway.

EDIT: I just tried to open the product guide in Abiword and after ten minutes of the app disk thrashing I gave up.

Go to the MS Vista site, click on the download link and register for the download. You don't have to download the beast again, but you'll be given a Product Key.

Beta 2 will expire on June 7, 2007, and they'll also make RC1 freely available "later this year".

Why would they set expiry on that date when *supposedly* Vista will be out at the start of 2007!?

I downloaded it last night, but now you guys have about talked me into scrapping it. My DVD-/+R won't make an ISO on a blank DVD-R using K3B or Nautilus so I went and spent my perfectly good money on some blank DVD+Rs just for this. Oh well, I guess I can use them for something else.

Just a suggestion: you could title it "Run Windows Vista on Ubuntu without installing", or something like that. Now it looks like you would be offering to overwrite Ubuntu with Windows Vista :) (at least that was my first impression)

Isn't it sad...?

If you wanna stay competative in your job search (in the future) or in your job (if your job is to fix Window$ computers) there is no real way around getting into Windows Vista at some stage. You should at least know the basics and some problem solutions. The thing is that I am absolutely not willing to infect my computer with MS software again. Especially not now that I have got a perfect Kubuntu system running which I adore since trying Breezy the first time.

"Unfortunately" I don't have a spare computer available to install the Vista beta on and as I said I will definately not put it on my laptop. Which leaves me no other option than checking out your experiences. Keep on checking and keep on posting. It's very interesting to see how many more features MS has stolen from other OS's. ;-)

All the best

Amir
