Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init.
run-init: /etc/init:Permission denied
[1.636730] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Will it boot from the CD? Depending on the release you might try holding down shift or escape at boot and getting to the grub list. Choose the recovery kernel (second down) and this will/should give you more clues as to the issues. How old is that hard drive? Might be an idea to boot from the CD and save important files to an external drive or other device for safe keeping.

How long has 10.04 LTS been reliably booting for you?
