Hey Everyone,

I am having a problem. So, I had to reboot my computer with a fresh copy of Ubuntu, but the only CD version that I had at the time was Ubuntu 9.04. The problem that I am having is that I cannot update or upgrade from this version. I have the Ubuntu 10.04 version on my flash drive, but my computer refuses to load it from the USD Drive even though I went through the MS DOS and changed it to load from the USB Drive first. Note: This is the only file on my USB Drive. When I go to do updates, it starts at loading up to 121 files, but stops at 95 out of 121 and gives me this:

"Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."

When I try to upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 this is what I get:

"Failed to fetch

Fetching the upgrade failed. There may be a network problem."

I would burn a CD with the 10.04 version, but my CD ROM drive will read disc, but won't load or burn them at all on my computer.

I have also tried doing:

sudo apt-get update

and

sudo apt-get upgrade

and I get the same issues with the system

So, if you have any advice, I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you!

you can make a live USB and you can upgrade from that .

Ubuntu 9.04 is no longer supported, so you can not update nor install any new applications with synaptic or apt-get.

The best you can do is probably backup all your personal files and start from scratch by copying the downloaded .iso file to a USB flash drive using unetbootin. I don't think the startup-disk-creator was available in 9.04, but if it was try using that instead of unetbootin.

If you like unity and the new desktop that entails go for 11.10, otherwise I would suggest you install 10.04, the last LTS version which has another 15 months support, and has the same desktop environment as 9.04, so will be familiar to you.

Thank you! I will try the EOL thing and see if it works and let you know. I did try the usb drive and my laptop would not work with it. yes, I did go into MS DOS to tell it to boot from the USB Drive first and then everything else. My computer sat there with a little blinking underscore for an hour and a half last night. So, I don't think that the USB Drive thing will whrk, but thank you for the information for sure! It is a lexar 8g flashdrive.

But is it really worth it as you will end up with another version that is not supported if you go from 9.04 to 9.10.

@OP. Bite the bullet and get a new version from scratch, either 10.04 or 11,10; it is likely to be much quicker and a more sensible way in the long run.

By the way, when you say you went into msdos, I assume you mean the BIOS setup pages.
