the verion number of the Ubuntu releases show when they were released. Ubuntu 11.10 (the currently latest released version) was released in October 2011. Ubuntu 12.04 will be released April 2012. You can however install the alpha (do not expect it to work out of the box, it is the alpha after all).

12.04 won't be released until late April, 2012.

It is being tested now but I would recommend you wait until a number of weeks after the release date before you install it - :)

the alpha version is the "in-development" version of the newest ubuntu. You can get it here http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/precise/alpha-1/

Do not use 12.04 or any development branch of Ubuntu as your main operating system. Create a separate partition and run it as a dual boot. This is what I am doing.

I always test out a new release of Ubuntu on another partition before converting my working Ubuntu to the new release. I want to find out if there will be any problems getting the new Ubuntu set up the way I like Ubuntu to be.

I am now doing this with 12.04 alpha. I find that it is stable enough to do every day work but things do break sometimes.

The other week an update of Libreoffice failed to replace all the Libreoffice components and Libreoffice stopped working. In the process someone messed up the links in the repositories and for a few hours we could not get any updates. Finally, the update started working again and Libreoffice was fixed but it is now 3.5 beta. Expect a different looking Libreoffice.

A few days ago the Software Centre stopped working for a few hours until we received an update of some Python libraries.

So, it can be fun or frustrating to use a development branch of Ubuntu. If you are not prepared for this, then wait until the middle of the month of May and check out the Ubuntu+1 section of this forum. It is where those testing Ubuntu hang out.

If you are serious about testing Unbuntu you will be welcome.
