I tried downloading several versions of Ubuntu (desktop, server, both 32 and 64) by downloading the iso and burning to cd, and the installation works on other systems, all exept this one.

Hardware:
Board info
manufacured : intel
product name : d102ggc2

Other
2 G of ram installed,
Intel Pentium 4 processor @ 3.0 GHz
20 G HDD being used due to belief my 400 G HDD is faulty
MTSUMI FX48A1W CD drive

the only piece of other hardware is an extra Ethernet on the PCI expansion bay

The problem is as fallows:

I boot with the disk inserted into the CD drive, and the languages menu appears. I press enter to select English, and then press enter on install Ubuntu (server/desktop) After i press this, the computer seems to freeze for a short bit, with the CD drive active (making noise and light blinking) but then the computer shows a black screen, but the monitor is still on, not going into hibernation.

Is there a hardware problem, or do i need to try a different CD brand to burn onto? What do i do.

This computer is intended to be the head node of a beowulf cluster after i install the necessary software.

Thanks in advance for any help given

Only problem is that i have tried several of these options, using the nomodeset, ext.
Also might add that this board i am using the built in VGA output, which is a ATI Radeon XPress 200

Another solution could be the installation of the minimal Ubuntu. Then you can choose downloading the full option.

That would therefore require internet to install, yes?

Yes you need a good connection. If not you can try installing the alternate CDs:

i tried one of the mini CD installs, but it seemes to go back to the blank screen. I tried expert mode, and it loaded linux and another wierd file, said it was ready, then went to the black screen

In that case check the alternate installation.

I have a few other vidio cards hanging around, none of the other install options seem to work, would installing a different g-card help any?

Desktop Linex 64 bit leaves me at a screen after i put in a command for custom boot that displays a lot of statistics, it seems.
