It depends on what version of Ubuntu you have. If 11.10, Gnome Shell or Unity?

Ubuntu 11.04
I have Gnome 2 and also Unity 2D.

Then you want GTK2 themes for Gnome 2. There are lots of them at:

http://gnome-look.org/

Look on the left for GTK 2.x

You also mentioned cursor themes. Same site as my previous post, but look for X11 mouse themes on the left.

How to install these Themes.

To install a GTK 2 theme:

The theme comes in an archive file. I extract the entire archive into:

~/.themes

To do that, right click on the archive and select open. Then Extract, and browse to the target directory. If necessary, use CTRL+H to show hidden directories (.themes is a hidden directory)

When you next open the Appearance dialog, the new theme should show up. If not, log out and back in.

Cursor (mouse pointer) themes are extracted into:

~/.icons

You need to use the customize button to change the cursor used on a theme.

I will add this second method for a gtk-2.x theme:

In the appearance dialog, there is an install button on the themes tab. You can use that, and browse to the themes package you downloaded.

Note: when you customize a theme and save the customization with "save as" button, it is then saved into:
~/.themes

Greetings all,

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone for helping to provide such a great resource here. :D

As huge as this library of data is, it is nice to be able to find things quickly.

Unfortunately certain subject still manage to get lost among the massive amount of information here.

In my search for trying to find some decent theme options for version 8.10, I have come across many links to the gnome-look.org (http://www.gnome-look.org) website.

However, no matter which link I try, it seems I keep getting this similar error:

Internal Error. Exception id:2265709708

Would anyone happen to know what the details of this error mean?

Is the site currently down for maintenance?

Has it been down permanently for the past while?

I am not 100% sure ATM how to ask all of these questions in one simplified line.

Also, if the site is down for maintenance (for whichever duration), are there other resources around that might offer up a better solution to finding more custom theme options for 8.10 ?

...That is, w/o having to upgrade to version 9, 10 or 11 or some other distro version entirely?

I know these are a lot of questions to answer...

If but the most relevant ones can be answered (i.e. the "Which site can I find decent custom themes for 8.10 w/o having to go to gnome-look.org (http://www.gnome-look.org)? and "What are the details of the error messages I keep getting for gnome-look.org (http://www.gnome-look.org)?"), any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you everyone once again for your time and help!! ;)

All the best to a most enjoyable day/evening/afternoon,

~HS.

P.S. I should probably note that my Linux OS is not online. My current connection is running via a Windows XP system, so I will have to take a USB key to transfer whichever info from my XP system to the Ubuntu box. Thanks again for your patience and understanding! ;) \/

I'm not sure of the exact specifics of it. Sometimes when I would try to go to it it wouldn't work either. Sometimes it does work.
