I've been running Thunderbird 8.0 which is packaged with the OS. I've been trying to upgrade 8.0 to 9.0, which has not been an easy process for me as a primary windows guy. I've downloaded the 9.0 and unpackaged into a single "thunderbird" directory in my Downloads. That's where I'm stuck I can find the command or process to do the installation. I know that sounds pretty ridicules but that's my situation and I certainly would appreciate any help! Thanks.....

What version of Ubuntu ? TBird was updated 9.0 via the update manager in 11.10. There is a PPA for 10.04 , 10.10 , and 11.04 http://www.tuxgarage.com/2011/12/thunderbird-9-available-in-stable-ppa.html

I am on Lubuntu 11.10 and Thunderbird is version 8 after the latest update today.

The ppa above gets a 404 not found.

Ubuntu is what I was referring to . There was no packages for that PPA released for Lubuntu .

That PPA, same as any other PPA, for that matter, should work for Lubuntu too, but it doesn't provide packages for Oneiric 11.10, as you yourself stated before:

However, the current version of Thunderbird in Oneiric's official repos is indeed v8.0, for whatever reason:

The TBird 9.0 update came to Ubuntu 11.10 via the update manager without the need for a PPA . I don't know why Lubuntu would not have been updated .

When checking the Launchpad page for other versions Lubuntu is not listed. https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/thunderbird-stable
