Have you tried to install the driver? what happens if you open webcam software such as Skype or Cheese?

Do you need a (separate) driver? My daughter has such a computer, and I checked that the built-in webcam works out of the box with her Linux Mint 9. Starting the test window in Skype shows my ugly face ;-)

Edit: I have checked that it works in Mint

Have you also tried a clean install to see if the drivers load then? If all else fails then I think it would be a good idea.

(In linux) drivers for the most common hardware come with the kernel (they are not separate). You can also download and install separate drivers (similar to what is common in Windows). This is the case for some graphics chips and wireless LAN chips.

A clean install is where you re-install Ubuntu. I would use that as a complete last resort. However, in most cases drivers are a part of the kernel as sudodus says so your computer not recognising your webcam is unusual
