I recently bought a new hdd for my laptop and the first thing I done is install Ubuntu. After a couple of days I thought that Id better dual boot with winXP for certain apps that would come in handy for uni. So I put in the dreaded cd of doom and changed the bios to boot from the cd drive.
What happened you ask, it just installed fine you say, well not exactly. You see the cd was not recognised and it just booted straight back into Ubuntu. I originally thought that I must not have set the BIOS correctly. So I did it again and the same thing happens again.
I knew it wasnt the cd drive because it would recognise it when I was booted in Ubuntu, I knew it wasnt the cd because it works on my desktop computer. Darn I thought, I cant install windows. Hence Im left with an unviolated computer which works perfectly. As for the windows apps that I needed, WINE seems to runs most of them perfectly.
I figure that the reason the windows cd didnt work is because my computer has actual emotions and hates it. I didnt have the heart to push it any further.
Just thought Id share my wonderful and liberating experience with you all.:D

You have my congratulations.
Prehaps for your convience towards knowing when to buy the next Windows Mr Gates decided to make the discs stop working after a certain date. Of course then Vista slipped and spoiled everything.

Despite all logic to the contrary, I've always believed that computers gain a personality from their users.

I'm pretty sure about this. Often when I go to fix somebodys computer it all problems dissappear when I start the machine, it works perfectly as long as I'm around, and problems start again after I've left.. I suppose it's because all computers like me more than their owners :-k

Only computers capable of inductive as well as deductive logic can gain a personality. :)

I think there was a test done a while ago (it was mentioned in a local newspaper) which found that computers are more likely to work if you're nice to them and plead for them to work...
Either there's something fishy going on, or this is just another "feature" found in XP...
My system isn't as lazy with Dapper on it.
It'll now obey my commands, not bug out when programming (using Delphi 7 under XP caused some annoying error messages that wouldn't stop unless I terminated the processes through CTRL+ALT+DEL) and it does funky effects that keep me happy (XGL).

I will attest to the theory that computers have a personality.
I burned a couple of cd's in Breezy right before Dapper came out in preparation. I downloaded Dapper at work, but forgot cd's to burn it to, so that evening, I downloaded it on my laptop and downloaded the desktop cd. It wouldn't burn.
[Computer was sad that it was getting upgraded]
So I burned it at work the next day and brought it home to install. This was last Friday. I put my low-format utility disk in the drive and it wouldn't boot off of it. I try the desktop cd, same issue.
I kept trying randomly throughout the night while I was playing Halo2 on the 360 and it still didn't work.
I finally told my computer that it was good and then slammed my cd drive tray shut, again, this is a laptop and they're pretty fragile and the damn thing worked. I was able to format the drive and install Dapper, after a little messing with the computer again. It didn't seem ok with not having anything to read... (lame personification, but it works)
I'm deeming it brute-force affection. I have yet to try loading a cd in Dapper, but will do so tonight.
I too have also had to fix someones computer and it worked as soon as I sat down in front of it, but as soon as I left, the problem came back.
