I'm on ubuntu 11.10 and i switched to gnome 3.0. from unity. All the programs to manage compiz still work but they really aren't doing anything. I have no idea where to start becuase im not getting any error messages.

That's because Gnome Shell doesn't use Compiz, but Mutter. ;-)

And if meaning the Gnome Fallback sessions, they use Mutter and Metacity, respectively (by default).

Regards.

With Gnome Shell?: Not at all.
With Gnome Fallback: http://www.tuxgarage.com/2011/10/running-gnome-classic-with-compiz.html

Buddy, so far I'm not even knowing what session you are actually running ;-) , a screenshot would be handy.

If following that guide, you should actually get Compiz running with Gnome Fallback. However, this all is redundant if you actually want to use Gnome Shell; and with it, as I said, you can't run Compiz.

Gnome and Gnome shell are two different things.
