I've done some googling for a solution to this, but I couldnt find anything that fixed my issue.

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 I have no desktop icons - My Computer, Home dir, mounted drives.. etc. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be the default behavior, but if someone could point me in the right direction I would very much appreciate it.

If I recall correctly, the default Unity desktop doesn't have any icons on it. Everything is supposed to be managed through the Unity button. There's a way to enable things on the desktop, but I can't recall what it is.

I don't understand this current trend of essentially disabling the desktop.

Hi,

Install the Gnome Tweak Tool (in terminal)

sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool

Then run it (just use dash search and enter "tweak"). Under Desktop enable "Have file manager handle the desktop."

That worked perfectly, thank you very much!
