Hello everyone,
Can I upgrade directly from 10.04 to 11.04 or 11.10 or do I have to go to 10.10 first?

The answer is no, you have to walk using all the steps to the ladder!
My personal opinion? do a fresh installation, you will spend less time and the result will be far better.

Thanks for the quick information. Then I will have to backup all my documents and my bookmarks, right?

Yes, a correct installation, starts from a fresh formatting. And the backup is an everyday task. The hard drives have the tendency to die, sometimes without warning.

+1 Always a fresh install and be sure to back your files.

How do I backup my bookmarks?

If you are using Firefox, open the home folder, press CTRL+H to see the hidden files and copy the folder .mozilla
In the new installation paste this folder to the same place -before opening the Firefox (because Firefox will create this folder when opening for the first time)
This way you are going to have exactly the same configuration you had before, with the same extensions, bookmarks etc.

Another way to backup bookmarks is to click on bookmarks and then Show all bookmarks and there is an option to import and export your bookmarks.
The first option backs them up as a .json file which is easily imported once exported.

It works well.

EDIT: Didn't mean to butt in, just wanted to add my 2 cents

I have updated on several PCs from each version since 8.10 without doing a fresh install without problems.
However, I would not advise skipping a version,as the only time I have had problems was on one PC moving from Mythbuntu 10.10 to 11.10.
As ever, always back up your home partition first.
