I am trying to install kubuntu 11.10 on an older asus machine (details unknown, it has 1Gb ram.) from a live cd. Unfortunately the live cd won't boot, and give garbled graphics with purple stripes and just freeze. The issue isn't the CDs. I had them (ubuntu 10.04, 11.04, linux mint 10 etc...) running on other machines without problems. No distro cd I have will boot, other than OpenSuse 11.2. I am still a novice in linux. I have tried to add nomodeset after selecting F6, which made the blue screen, the text Kubuntu 11.10 and the four dots indicating the system is loading show, however after a while the screen goes black. I tried adding xforcevesa without success. I have tried adding line VGA=xxx, where I have tried 771, 787, 791 and other numbers, unfortunately the screen goes black again with monitor's light flashing. I know the graphics card is Asus ATI, but what model I don't know. Is there any way to boot the live cd? I really wish I could install Kubuntu.
