Would this grub entry prevent me from booting a live cd?
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset blacklist.nouveau=1 quiet splash"
My graphics card is an Nvidia Gtx 570m. Thank you ;)

Grub has nothing to do with live sessions. Think of it...you boot from the CD/USB you created to install/try it. This also applies for computers with no hard drive or with a hard drive but no Operating System.
in short: your grub settings have 0 effect on live boots.

Ok. I cannot for the life of me boot a live cd...any live cd...as I like to check out other distros. I get a black screen and that is it. Not sure what the deal is:(

your computer is very old, it may not handle the newer distros (11.10 for example needs 1 GB RAM and a 1 GHz CPU) here are further details https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

It is brand new. I got it Tuesday. It is a ZaReason Verix 17. I just upgraded the kernel to 3.1.4 so I'll see if that makes a difference. Thanks :)
