I went ahead and installed Ubuntu 11.10 using a disc. I'm dual booting between Ubuntu and Win 7. Everything looks fine. Only thing that makes me wonder is why my fan is always blowing when I'm on Ubuntu. My computer is perfectly silent when in Win 7....

I have a Dell Studio XPS 7100. My processor is AMD 1090T (6 cores @ 3.2ghz). My graphics card is the ATI Radeon 5770. I have 16gb of ram.

Has anyone else come across this issue before?

This post mentions that the problem occurs with the opensource graphics driver but not the proprietary one: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1749276

This one may be useful as well: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1700518

Hmmm... wow. I read a few of those threads and I think I'm gonna pass on this for now. I won't uninstall Ubuntu, but until this issue is truly resolved I'll stay on Win 7. I'm a complete newbi to Ubuntu. That's intimidating enough. But a problem such as this that has the potential to damage my computer so that I don't have use of either operating system is a bit much at this time. I'll keep checking back to see if/ when this is solved.

Thanks
