Hi,

I would like to know what happen when a release reach the end-of-life.
Are updates provided? Is it still possible to download and install them?

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, and its time is running out (end-of-life April 2012).

Thank you

The definition of 'end of life' is 'no more security updates'. It is the main reason for installing a new release.

Normal Ubuntu releases are supported for 18 months. Previous Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) releases are supported for 3 years on the desktop and 5 years on the server. Starting with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, LTS releases will be supported for 5 years on both the desktop and the server.

End-of-life releases get moved to: http://old-releases.ubuntu.com

If you change your software sources to that URL then you can use the EOL repos to install new applications and also historical updates up to the EOL date.

Disclaimer: Since EOL Ubuntu releases are essentially "abandonware" I only give you this information for educational purposes, I do not recommend EOL releases for important work.
