Get UK Keyboard working

I am using Ubuntu Desktop on Lucid and the keyboard constantly changes British keys to American keys, like #/£, ~/| and "/@ around. In the System->Preferences->Keyboard menu I have set the keyboard to UK.

It is only when I log into it via Putty that the UK keys come out right. Is there some other place where some more configuration is required?

Actually your settings should be enough..
you can try setxkbmap -query to see your current layout settings.
