Hey guys, I work for a company and we've started selling a new product where we have an agreement with Microsoft where we are bound to sell the Microsoft products cheaper than the Linux distributions we sell. Is it just me or does this seem like a bid to under cut Linux?

Does that mean you give us money to install Windows 7? - In that case I'll take 100 copies.
(That's about the only way to getting it cheaper than a Linux distro!)

well... in many notebooks/laptops, producers of 3rd party software /AV, etc- all that crap that comes with home-grade laptops/ are paying producers to include their crapware in product... that's why sometimes it's cheaper to buy laptop with windows than linux...
but ad rem- i think that lolium is just trolling.

MS has had deals like that in the past, even some extreme price cuts (>90%). Can you post more details or point to where they can be found online? That kind of agreement is very interesting to a lot of people.

Yes thanks, I was aware of that and I also recognized the potential for baiting but gave the benefit of the doubt.

Bought a machine just last week and in pricing up an OS free / barebones laptop with like for like hardware it was cheaper to buy a Win machine and nuke it (OK... I confess I'm back to dualbooting for a while...) than it was buy bare :(

January sales and retail outlet vs specialist may be a factor but it still means you are being done over by MS :(

That's been my experience every single time. It's almost always cheaper to buy with Windows and strip it off than to buy without.

Usually I don't even bother making any recovery disks. Just rip 'n run.

At least the new Samsung had the common decency come with a full W7 install disk so I have something physical to throw

Lol. On my brand-new netbook (which is my main computer) I didn't even boot Windows once. I just plugged in the flashdrive and did a full install, obliterating Windows entirely.

In cases like that some people opt for a Windows Refund (www.google.com/?hl=en#hl=en&q=windows+refund). Sometimes it goes quickly and smoothly other times it requires patience, but money is money.

We should all do that, so hardware dealers know there is something else they can offer, and they don't have to obey to MS.

Anyway, I can't. I bought a no-OS system.
