After umpteen attempts to install Ubuntu in various guises failed miserably, I thought I'd succeeded with the 32-bit alternate version (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/alternative-download) of Lubuntu 11.10.
However although everything seemed to go well with the install, I get a black screen when I start it.
After reading many emails with similar issues I've removed "quiet splash" and inserted "nomodeset" from the initial startup command file, and tried all variants I could locate for the graphics (starting with vga=791) but so far no success.
The machine is basically an Asus A7N8X motherboard with a NVIDIA nForce2 chipset.
When I try to start it, it gets as far as saying:
Starting NTP server ntpd [ok]
Starting bluetooth [ok]
and that's it.
Any help gratefully received.
Thanks
