The grub2-splashimages package installs 16 TGA images into /usr/share/images/grub. Only two of these images work: Windbuchencom.tga and 050817-N-3488C-028.tga. You can confirm this with Grub Customizer or any image viewing program.

This might be yet another reason people are having trouble with background images in Grub2.

I have version 1.01 of grub2-splashimages.
I'm running 64-bit Xubuntu 11.10.

Check out the How To in my sig. It lets you create a pretty nice custom grub2 menu which you never have to mess with.
It's all manual but, pretty straight forward.
