Hello, I have an old P3, which had XP on it, Sony dvd burner worked fine. Since it's an older machine, decided to install Ubuntu 4.1 (had a disc lying around).

It was not able to read DVDs, but only CDs through the drive

Figuring that an upgrade would help, upgraded to 11.10.

Still the same problem - will not recognize DVDs.

Have not found any drivers for the device.

Has anyone had this problem before?

Thanks for your help!!

I've searched through the forums, trying a few tricks now, can't find anything concrete.

I don't need to watch DVDs, just want to transfer data.

I've noticed that other folks have problems with Sony dvds.

I'm thinking, might as well just buy a used non-Sony dvd player, nice n easy.

If this doesn't work, will be back for more advice, thanks!! :D
