Maybe your system isn't capable of running something as graphics and processor intensive as Unity or GNOME. Try Lubuntu (http://www.lubuntu.net/) or Xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/).

They both have a lighter desktop environment that regular Ubuntu, and therefore require less resources to run.

Adding to what Audio said: I use Xubuntu. If you like the set-up of Mac, then you'll enjoy it. I personally like it because it keeps everything off the desktop and into nice sections. Sorta like Unity, but without all the annoyingness of it.

Were you able to run any prior version of Ubuntu (if so what versions)? How long did you wait at that black screen, because after a fresh install or upgrade, the first start-up tends to take a little time. You may have to give it a couple of minutes.

Is it a blank screen with a flashing cursor?
Does Ctrl+Alt+F7 works?
