Well, my machine crapped out today. It tries to boot and gives me a bunch of illegible gibberish that only the Borg could decipher. So, to check the disk, I went to do a Live CD boot. Nothing. Disk runs and I get to the Ubuntu logo and the 5 dots on the screen and that's where it stays. CD stops running and the dots keep on running across the screen. I tried the nomodeset and that does the same thing.

Any other ideas? I'm about to chuck the computer out the window.

How old is the unit? Could be a bad memory stick or even a bad connection internally. I would begin checking connections, swapping RAM in & out. Just a few thoughts.

It's about a year old. It's on pretty much 24/7, doesn't get moved around (even though it's a laptop), and I've tested the RAM. Today it started misbehaving and when I rebooted it went tango-uniform.

I've burned a new Ubuntu CD... hoping there was a bad sector on my other disc...

Thanks for the response! I'll keep trying...
