Hey everyone, fairly new Ubuntu initiate here using oneiric ocelot (first week). I'm wondering if there's a way to move the Dash away from the left side, since it tends to pop up and get in the way sometimes. If that can be done in vanilla Ubuntu or if I need to download a package, either way is fine. Thanks.

I'd like to do that, too. I've tried the obvious like right-clicking on the dash and also checking System Settings, but no obvious solutions are there.

At this time you can only move Unity launcher to the bottom, http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=5&ved=0CEoQFjAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.webupd8.org%2F2011%2F10%2Fhow-to-move-unity-launcher-to-bottom-of.html&ei=b17_TraGAoSCtgeN2tGfDw&usg=AFQjCNGbr5xap9KE5fbpbdopLjEHWGgyYw

That way appears to need 1) a PPA and 2) works on only 32-bit. Both are deal-breakers.

no, it works on 64 bit too. I have tried it, works pretty nicely, but if you have issues with expo plugin, you need to reduce the "x distance" in expo plugin from 64 to 0 in ccsm

If you install Compiz Config Settings Manager and then click 'Unity Plugin' you can change the way the side launcher behaves. If you set the reveal to 'NEVER' it will at least not annoy you by suddenly appearing! You can also reduce the launcher icon size to 32 which helps if you do not have a widescreen aspect monitor.

Like you, I think it would be much better if it could be more comprehensively customised. Have you tried installing the Gnome Shell desktop to see if you prefer that?

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

Once done, just log out then click the gear symbol next to your login name and select Gnome instead of Ubuntu.
