I'm new to Ubuntu, but reasonably experienced in Windows. I tried to connect a 1920x1080 HDTV to an older computer with an nVidia GEForce video card running Edubuntu 11.10, but was not able to get a resolution higher than 640x480, no matter which restricted driver I installed.

I uninstalled the restricted drivers and rebooted but now I have nothing. I see the BIOS screen of the computer but after that it is all black.

How can I get at least a basic display driver loaded so I can salvage my data in case I need to reinstall the operating system from scratch?

Could I use a live CD to boot and access my data on the hard drive?

I know, self inflicted wounds are most painful... ;-)

Thanks!

Sorry for your problems with the display. I wish I had the answer for that for you.

If you boot from a Live CD, you will have access to all of your data, even Windows. You can back up your data onto a flash drive, an external hard drive, or even a CD or DVD.

However, if your home directory was encrypted, it becomes more complicated. Let us know if that applies to you.

(In future, please do daily backups in case this type of thing happens.)
