how do i get rid of the red button on my top right side of the Ubuntu software center. Am trying to download a software but it has stalled

The red button is telling you that Ubuntu needs to restart to complete updates. (It does that when the updates affect certain running services such as the kernel.)

I would suggest you cancel your download, restart, and try again to download the software.
