I wanted WINE on my computer, and since I don't have it hooked up to the internet ( http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=189064 ) I can't use Adept.

I managed to get the source on tucows. I know I could find a .deb somewhere, but I thought to myself, "Why don't I just compile it myself?". It quickly struck me that I don't know a thing about compiling.

I've been trying to writh some programs in python, nothing big, since my skills are very limited. And I thought it would be joyus and learning experience to compile it from source, especially since I plan on sometimes go into this line of work/education, but the fact remains, I don't know how.

So I ask you, ubuntuforums user, could anyone of you guide me or point me in the right direction?

Any help would be appriceaited.

The basics of compiling from source are the following three commands (run from the directory you've unarchived the source into):
./configure
make
sudo make install

To unarchive the stuff in the first place
tar xvf <name of archive>.tar.gz
