I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 (64-bit) on a laptop. I like how easy it is to open files and run applications doing nothing more than hitting the meta key and typing part of the file or application name. I've noticed what appears to be a bug. If it isn't, I'd like to know how to fix it.

I notice this most when I have the laptop hooked up to a docking station or when I have a second monitor attached. The first time I open the dash after bootup, no amount of typing brings any text into the search bar at the top. If I close the dash and open it again, everything is fine.

Happens to me, too! But I no longer use Unity.

You ran into bug #860805 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/860805) which will be fixed with the upcoming unity release v4.26, probably at the beginning of January.
