11.10 bootup on ati HD4200 is fine, but shutdown is garbled

When my laptop boots up, the xubuntu loader shows fine, but when shutting down its garbled with an appearance similar to an improper resolution on an old crt but as the laptop and secondary are LCD this cant be case.

Any ideas?
