software center missing packages??

Software center is friendly, I'll give it that. But I've been finding that sometimes even when I know a package exists and know exactly what it is called I can't find it on Software Center. When this happens I generally close Software Center, bring up Synaptic instead and immediately find what I'm looking for. It's happened a number of times.

This confuses me. I assumed they use the same apt sources list to decide what repositories to look in. Is this not the case? When I bring up the "Software sources" from the menu it looks just like the one in Synaptic and seems to list all the same repositories.

There are some differences in package names between the two package managers.

SoftwareSources is just one package and just another way to pull it up in synaptic.
