just found this exiting app called habak, it creates desktop backgrounds from pictures and text, manipulating on the way. sounds good, but i can't get it to work under gnome.

is there a possibility to tell gnome to not draw over the root window?

anybody has experience with habak?
i could avoid the problem by making habak output into a file and then use that as a bg - but how???

Not sure about Habak itself, but you could try using Ubuntu Tweak to disable Nautilus from drawing the desktop (it draws the wallpaper as well, right over the root window as you've noticed). The option is in Ubuntu Tweak under Desktop Icon Settings - uncheck "Show Desktop Icons"

that was helpful!
however i also lose desktop icons in that case - are there other programs/file browsers capable of managing desktop icons without painting over the root window?
