which dir to install apps?

Just want to know where do I need to install applications meant for all users?
usr\local\bin ?

eg. sickbeard tar.

If you're installing something from source (tar?), when you run the install script, it typically writes the files to a defined set of directories. You would have to look at the script and modify it in order to change the target directories.
