In what way "faster"? Boot time? Application Launch time?

Boot time and Application Launch time. Thanks.

Both boot time and application launch seem to be faster. While I have not timed actions of the two OS's, Ubuntu feels snappier on the same hardware (AMD Phenom II X4 N970, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4520 video). Runs very cool (temperature) on Ubuntu as well.

Nah, slower in almost all respects. And the hang ups, aarghh! Why did I ever remove 10.04 only I will know. :( System specs in sig.

Boot time is much much faster and everything is responsive almost straight after booting. Unlike in windows where even after booting you need to let it sit for a couple of minutes and let it load **** in the background.

When it comes to launching applications I found ubuntu to be just a little bit slower but nothing to really complain about.

Not sure, Windows 7 operates better in most aspects for me though. This wasn't always the case for me. Ubuntu 10.04 was the pinnacle of Ubuntu Operating systems in my opinion. 11.10 is a step forward from 11.04 though.

Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS is faster boot / app start than Win7 on my box. Ub 11.nn both faster that Ub 10.04.03 on this h/w.

I'm not going to take time to quantify but a SWAG (Simple Wild A** Guess) would be that 11.10 boots to a usable desktop 30%-50% faster on the same machine. Windows 7 still does the hard drive activity light flick--flick-flick-------flick--flick routine that windows has always done. There may be some sort of optimization but I don't know about it. App launch time differences are less noticeable but still favor Ubuntu by 10%-20% I'd guess. Windows 7 seems like quite a decent OS but my preferences run more to Linux GUIs/DEs than Windows GUIs. Different strokes for different folks there, though.

who actually sits there with a stop watch to see?

i think what would be more relevant, is how fast a browser loads on systems with more than enough cpu power and memory.

chrome verse firefox, safari verse internet exploder...

now if this is some sort of light weight thing, and your computer sucks (no offense), install something lighter than windows and it will perform better ;)

faster except for wake up after suspend mode.

Well I haven't used Windows since 2007 so I cant comment on 7 but.... Since I am running the LXDE Desktop.... mine is blindingly fast!

11.10 was only booting fast for me, while Windows 7 did everything else faster. The KDE side of things is closer to Windows 7 in performance.

I totally abandoned Win 7 for this! In all my computers is terribly slow to boot and shutdown.

tbh it was a little slower than win7 on my machine (aside from boot time)

I'm using a Dell Latitude E6400, 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 6 gigs of RAM, the Quadro NVS 160M.

Windows 7 is faster in all respects than Ubuntu 11.10. It's kind of depressing. I really like Gnome 3, and wish I could use it 100% of the time, but Windows 7 is just so much faster that Linux isn't worth it. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks.

I own an ASUS N61JV-X2 notebook PC with Crucial 8 gigabytes of DDR3 1,066 MHz SDRAM and an Intel 2nd Generation 2.5" 34nm MLC NAND FLASH X25-M 160 gigabyte Solid State Drive. I used to own Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. It was unstable and unreliable. It was slow and I needed to re-install the entire operating system from scratch. I chose to install Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit. Ubuntu 64 bit is lightening fast in all performance metrics on the same computer and it is extremely reliable, stable, and it performs much faster than Windows 7 64 bit. I love Ubuntu! Ubuntu is my preferred operating system of choice because it is easier to use and it is available for free of charge. Ubuntu runs on my ASUS N61JV-X2 notebook PC at much lower temperatures and the notebook fan hardly ever kicks into high gear most of the time. I also have an extra 1.5 - 2.0 gigabytes of available RAM to play with in Ubuntu that were gobbled up by all of the security software that I purchased when I used Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit which made it much slower.

Well Ubuntu definitely boots faster than win7 and loads a browser faster, but once you get around the first couple of minutes of warming up in windows, I'm sad to say that it feels snapier, and more responsive, and most surpisingly win7 hasn't crashed on me so far, while Ubuntu 11.10 has(hard reset crash as well as just irresponsive). Nevertheless ext4 is simply superior to ntfs imo - I mean 30-40% higher copy and read speeds, which is the bottleneck in modern computers so that's one for ubuntu. I was a die-hard gnome2 fan (and still a die-hard unity hater after testing it for a month) and since 11.10 I've tried kde - it didn't feel very stable, now I'm with gnome3 shell and it's.. ok I guess, but as soon as I have the time I'm putting on xubuntu and I hope then I'll be able to answer your question with "definitely xubuntu". :)

P.S. really annoying - when loaded I get same temperatures in Ubuntu and win7, but when idle win7 drops as much as 15C lower than the ubuntu idle temp...

A fresh install of Windows 7 feels snappier than a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.

Windows 7:

File Explorer -- starts in miliseconds

Ubuntu:
Nautilus file explorer -- takes about 3 seconds to start and 1 second to display the files

Chrome starts faster on Windows 7
Eclipse starts faster on Windows 7

The only slow thing I have noticed on Windows 7 is extracting ZIP archives which is about 3 times slower than Ubuntu.

My computer 2x2GHz Intel CPU, 3GB RAM, Intel GM45 GPU

Was Ubuntu 11.10 faster for you than Windows 7?

Well,let's put it this way:

Some years I bought a Dual AMD64 machine to specifically run Linux.Later,I decided to put XP on,because I had a few games I wanted to run and the other PC was too slow.It was the worst thing I ever did, because I watched that PC over a year slow to a crawl. At that time,I set up a dual boot with Ubuntu 11.04,then upgraded to 11.10 and that machine just flew!

Windows 7,is like any versions of Windows(design-wise),over time(the Registry is the main reason IMHO),it slows to a crawl and one can only do so much to keep it clean.

I tried the Ubuntu CD live on my Win7 Laptop just the other day and,boy was it fast.Unfortunately, the Brother MFC-J415 4-1 Printer could be problem,if I jumped ship on the Lappy.

When XP is done,I'm moving my other PC to Ubuntu, and eventually this Laptop, then I'll be Windows free.
