backup restore partition

I am looking for something similar to time machine in Mac.

I looked at some rsync tutorials, but none seem to agree with each other.

I looked at "Back in time" seems promising.

I am wanting to backup an entire partition from laptop hd to ext hd folder. Should laptop ever go fubar, I am hoping to put in new hd, stick in ubuntu live, and create new partition(large enough to hold) copy from exthd. Might need to run sudo update grub and play with conf file after.

Back in time seems nice for incremental, if possible to be used for complete restore.

Any ideas?

Yes. I did. As stated no agreement (what to ignore in tar, whole partition, etc) also...
incremental and differential
