So I tried Ubuntu on my old Dell from 2003, it is slow and compiz or any graphics do not work on it, RAM is to small and Graphics card is to old....SO if I put Lubuntu on it, would I be able to use some graphics like compiz?

Compiz is a compositing window managers, and not needed unless you want desktop effects.

Lubuntu does not use Compiz by default, due to it's high resource use. It is possible to install and configure Compiz on Lubuntu if so desired.

Keep in mind that Compiz uses a lot of resources (>80mb on my Ubuntu installation).

Might help if you posted specs like CPU, RAM & GFX chipset.

That said compiz uses a lot of resources.

Hi, I have an EeePC 900. Though I bought it in 2009, it probably has comparable specs to your Laptop's (700MHz Celeron CPU, crappy Intel GPU etc)

I am currently running Lubuntu 11.10 in it right now, and have ran Compiz as well back in the day. It was a very cheerful experience, very little lag and looked amazing. I did bench it recently, however, due to the Oneiric update making things (such as the Cube, Tiling) glitchy.

If you want some lightweight compositing alternatives (to run widgets or a dock, for example) I would suggest you to look up these:

1.Xcompmgr
2.Cairocompmgr

The latter is a little fancier, and presents some compiz-like effects.
I frankly don't think you'll be disappointed from using either one.

Hope it helps!

Compiz is a beast, it would defeat the whole purpose. Why does every try to cram compiz into everything, for a spinning cube???

Try Xfce, it is lightweight, but still has a built in compositor that can do transparencies and other effects. It won't do that stupid spinning cube, but on a low end rig why would you want to (it is stupid on a high end rig)?

There are people who use it for other reasons. I don't do the spinning cube, but I do use scroll superkey to zoom and I also like the fireball on the mouse and wobbly windows.

Anyway, here is a link to Lubuntu and Compiz and as you can see it plays nice with Compiz.
