function keys not working after upgrade to 11.10

I upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 today, and the function key no longer lets me adjust the volume or brightness (which should be Fn+F11 or Fn+F4 respectively).

I've been googling for an hour without luck. If anyone can help me find a solution I'd be very grateful!
