View Full Version : [ubuntu] How to boot from a cloned partition

thegreeneyes
December 7th, 2011, 11:47 PM
Hi, I have Ubuntu 11.10 running on a 20GB partition.

I created another partition in the same (and only) harddisk of 20GB.

I cloned the sda1 working partition on to sda2 empty partition using clonezilla.

I could boot from sda1 and redefine UUID for sda2, and modified /dev/sda2/etc/fstab with the new UUID for sda2. Then I ran

sudo update-grub

and expected to be able to boot from sda2 as I do from sda1. Grub shows the line to boot from sda2, but when I choose it, after a few seconds it says "error no such device" followed by some uuid.

Any advice about how to proceed to be able to boot from sda2 as I do from sda1?

Thanks

Grub still has a UUID that is wrong. You could try manually editing the grub stanza, by using e on grub menu, but I do not know correct entry.

Post this to see details. Then we may know what is wrong.

Paste contents of results.txt in a New Reply, then highlight entire file and click on # in edit panel(code tags) to make it easier to read.
Or You can generate the tags first by pressing the # icon in the New Reply Edit toolbar and then paste the contents between the generated [ code] paste here [ /code] tags.
V60 has improved formating and requires code tags to make it legible. New Version is a zip file that you have to extract to get .sh to run.
Install these before running script:
sudo apt-get install mawk

Thanks oldfred, I downloaded unzipped and ran the bash script you sent me, (I didn't install mawk), and the RESULTS.txt file follows at the end of these initial paragraphs.

My first question was a simplification of the real situation, I have several partitions on my sda and sdb. The working partition in my sda disk (where grub is installed I think) is sda9. The cloned partition which I want to be able to boot from is sda11.

I don't know if it is of interest, but this is the output of

sudo blkid :

$ sudo blkid
[sudo] password for vhg:
/dev/sda1: SEC_TYPE="msdos" LABEL="DellUtility" UUID="3030-3030" TYPE="vfat"
/dev/sda10: LABEL="SYS_BACKUPS" UUID="82017acc-d6db-45ef-a9de-5b909c12efa1" TYPE="ext4"

And this is the RESUTS.txt file. Thanks again!!!

Are you actually trying to put grub2 from sda11 on the MBR, or keep the grub2 from sda9 that is there currently (under assumption grub2 you are using is from sda9)?

In case you want to keep the current grub, you just boot your sda9 install and in terminal do:
sudo update-grub

That should locate the newly cloned partition with correct UUID etc. Not sure if you need to do something else after the cloning.

Since you are adding the cloned partition, not actually replacing your main root, you shouldn't need to do much except run update-grub.

Hi Darko, Hi oldfred.

Darko, I was just going to answer you "I already tried that", but ... I don't know why, I decided to try again, not making any additional changes but those already mentioned of the UUID redefinition and convenient changes in fstab, and ... of course, it worked!!!

I do not understand what happened in between, but ... I will move on.

Thanks again!!!

tge

PS) I remember the old joke of the IT guy suggesting to turn the power off and power the car on again just to check if the problem still is there... ;-)

Glad you got it working.

It does look like the grub in sdb refers to a UUID that does not exist, and your Centos has in its fstab a swap UUID that does not exist. I did not throughly check all settings.

I cannot tell you how many times, a power off/on, reboot or check of power cords has solved problems. I cannot open the case of my system without bumping something and invariably I have to recheck every connector to make sure it is tight.:)

I have found the right procedure to update grub after having cloned with clonezilla live CD, from one partition to another. My current system is UBUNTU 11.10

1) Initial situation : Working System on partition sda3, empty partition on sda6.
2) Boot with Clonezilla Live CD, follow the screens with defaults, only choose "Partition to Partition" cloning, and fill sda6 as a clone of sda3. When the process ends reboot.
3) Login to sda3

4) find out UUIDs of the disks using

> sudo blkid

you will notice sda3 and sda6 have the same UUID, you must modify UUID for sda6. You can do it typing

> uuidgen
> sudo tune2fs /dev/sda6 -U enter-the-new-UUID-just-generated

you can verify UUID changed typing again

> sudo blkid

5) now you must correct all the files in sda6 so that grub works ok when booting from that partition. Follow these steps:

> sudo mount /dev/sda6 /mnt
> sudo mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
> sudo mount -o bind /proc /mnt/proc
> sudo mount -o bind /sys /mnt/sys
> sudo chroot /mnt bash
# sudo update-grub
# exit
> sudo umount /mnt/dev
> sudo umount /mnt/proc
> sudo umount /mnt/sys
> sudo umount /mnt

6) now you can upgrade the local brub, typing

> sudo update-grub

7) et voila!!! you can reboot now, and booting from sda6 should be ok.

LAST COMMENT/SUGGESTION : remember to follow all these steps making use of very much good luck, otherwise, anything else could happen. ;-)
