Okay, Guys...

Guys?

Okay, Idea-time: iBuntu....

No, not "Ubuntu One," Not a music store, not a device.....

The basis of the idea is iPodLinux ala Ubuntu..

Am I being crazy? Or am I on to something?

I have the feeling this is the kinda thing that gets people banned from the internet.

If you'd like an alternative firmware for your Ipod, there's already Rockbox (http://www.rockbox.org/) or IpodLinux (http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net/).

I think the OP means using an iPod for a mobile Ubuntu installation (similar to the live USB).

Not so much. I mean an Ubuntu spin-off for ipod.... so, an alternative to iPodlinux and rockbox... In other words, Kinda like a live usb, Yes; However (comma, pause for effect), it's more like an installation of Ubuntu, on your iPod.

This is once again, probably a terrible idea, but I'm running on about 2.5 hours of sleep, and I'm a little mental, as I'm anticipating coming home to a new laptop at the end of the month... because my current box is broken.

... Why spend hundreds of pounds on a device so that you can install linux, when you could get a much bigger android tablet with a wifi connection and tinker with that for around the same money?

I don't know. It just seems like a fun idea... not to mention, Ubuntu has a rather large following (growing by the day!) and I think this would just put more into that...

And, I like the beauty that comes with Ubuntu... whereas the last time I saw iPodLinux it was rather lacklustre.

It also has a large overhead compared to say an LFS custom built system. I think contributing to existing Linux projects on embedded devices should scratch your itch

I can't see Canonical going for this; just as how you have to add the restricted extras in afterwards due to licencing, I can't see canonical intentionally supporting jailbreaking. When it was PPC macs before the intel chips, they could argue that the PPC port wasn't designed specifically for macs, but now that Ubnutu has become massive, and they haven't had to worry about licence issues with running on mac (thanks to apple allowing dual booting through bootcamp) for years, I can't see them deliberatly designing their systems to be in breach of apple's licences when they can just make a version for android tablets and phones that won't cause any trouble. A system so compatible a user could be naughty and install on a jailbroken device? sure! a system specifically designed for that purpose... not without Apple's permission I suspect!

Well played. I have a feeling you're probably right.

Besides, this has already been stated:

By 14.04 LTS Ubuntu will power tablets, phones, TVs and smart screens from the car to the office kitchen, and it will connect those devices cleanly and seamlessly to the desktop, the server and the cloud.

I think that this assessment is correct.

The way we access the Internet, connect to our friends, listen to music, watch films and go about our daily lives is rapidly evolving. We now use a diverse set of devices with an array of operating systems, which have a range of connectivity. Few people are exclusively loyal to a single technology provider.

Regards.
