Helo there everyone,

Hope this is in the right place,

After what i think may have been a dodgy shutdown I can't log in. When i click login after entering the username and password it bounces back to the login screen.

I've searched the interwebs for solutions to this problem and the most successful one seems to be deleting the Xauthority file. Unfortunately this doesnt work for me, nothing changes.

I can log no problem using the terminal after pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 and can see all my files there, there's no problem with the file system it seems.

I've been able to add a new user through logging in as guest, though it is very restricted despite being able to change the new user to administrator.

Really at a loss as to what to do next. I'm new to ubuntu but not to computers, so not that great with messing around in a terminal. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 6000 if thats anything relevant....

Thanks in advance for your help...

Run the Boot Info Script:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

Instructions are here (http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/)

Then post the results.txt

You have to boot from a live Ubuntu 11.10 CD, then choose Try Ubuntu and go to the desktop. Open a terminal by CTRL+ALT+T.

Then mount sda1:

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
Install grub:

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

If you have problems, run from your Ubuntu installation:
sudo update-grub

Thanks for your help!! i'll try this when i can get a hold of a blank CD. Is it possible to do all this from the recovery console?

If you can log in to recovery console, I think you can.

You don't need to mount.

$ sudo grub-install /dev/sda
$ sudo update-grub

Edit:  That just restores grub. From recovery you need to reset password.

I've searched the interwebs for solutions to this problem and the most successful one seems to be deleting the Xauthority file. Unfortunately this doesnt work for me, nothing changes.

The .ICEauthority file is also known to cause similar problems. Try deleting it and rebooting. Have a look at all of the permissions in your $HOME to make sure you are the owner:

ls -l ~

The ~/.xsession-errors log file may yield some clues as to what is happening.

Stop. Take a breath. Relax.

I'm sorry that you took some side trips suggested by others. The previous solutions about grub would have helped you if you were having a problem with a Grub password... But from reading your first post, you are having a more common problem when you get past the Plymouth splash, to the graphical login screen/logging into Linux from the Desktop Manager... This is rather a problem with the ".xauthority" file.

Here you go:
Reseting Authories Profile For Logging into X (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11404605&postcount=766)

The ~/.xsession-errors log file may yield some clues as to what is happening.

I had this problem today after an update and this is the one solution that worked for me. permissions were OK, but the .xsession-errors file showed an error with the .ICEauthority file. delete and reboot worked. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions and patience with this one, drivin me bananas so it is....

The situation is as follows now: I still get bounced back to the login screen when i try to log in. I think it's an ownership issue or something. When i log in under non-graphical mode (CTRL+ALT+F1) i can only get access-your-private-data.desktop and it's readme.txt file. contents are as follows:

dr-x------ 2 satan root 4096 2011-10-10 18.33 .
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 2011-11-26 13.26 ..
lrwxrwxrwx 1 satan root 56 2011-10-10 18.33 Access-Your-Private-Data.Desktop
lrwxrwxrwx 1 satan root 31 2011-10-10 18.33 .ecryptfs
lrwxrwxrwx 1 satan root 30 2011-10-10 18.33 .Private
lrwxrwxrwx 1 satan root 52 2011-10-10 18.33 Readme.txt

... if this is any help. So i seem to have locked myself out of the hard disk, nice one. I tried using the installation CD to access it but i'm out of my depth with that one and don't want to mess it up more than i already have.

So if you have any suggestions, i'm all ears and very thankful...
