I attempted to upgrade from 11.04 Natty to 11.10 Oneiric today, and discovered that I would be forced to lose some important packages, such as gnome-panel and tsclient. How can I upgrade without losing my carefully set up Gnome environment?

Gnome-panel will still mostly be there, but your right, i don't see tsclient. However this indicates that there will be one:

Your changing from gnome2 to gnome3, theres bumps in the road.

Ouch, didn't realize that. I guess I'll look into some other desktop environments *before* upgrading!
