Wooooohooooooo!!!!

:guitar:

Most of us know that Linux has over 90% of the server share for the top 500 supercomputers. As of June 2010 Microsoft Windows has had 4 supercomputers in that list. I was browsing the web today and noticed that this stat has been updated for this November. Now Micosoft has only 1 spot in the top 500.

Here is a list of Microsoft's number of servers in the top 500:

November 2011 - 1
November 2010 - 3
November 2009 - 4
November 2008 - 4
November 2007 - 1
November 2006 - 1
November 2005 - 1
November 2004 - 1
November 2003 - 1
November 2002 - 1
November 2001 - 1

I looked up the one Windows machine and see that it's in 58th spot. So it's going to be a while before it gets wiped off the list:

I took a look at this computers stats throughout the years:

Year Rank Cores
2011 58 30720
2010 35 30720
2009 19 30720
2008 11 30720

Seems it has not increased in size or speed in all these years. With further investigation I see that they were originally on a Linux machine in 2007 and had been pushed out of the top 500 from the 10th spot over a number of years. Looks like maybe they got enticed into replacing their servers with Microsoft junk. Perhaps they'll replace it with Linux servers when they need to update their systems?

Here is an overall graph:

Anyways, it bugs me to see a Windows computer in the top 500. It gives something for Microsoft to brag about.

I see Unix computers gaining some ground that microsoft has lost. Is there any chance that these Unix computers are Apple Servers? I see one computer in the list that is BSD.

Yes, this is absolutely Smashing!
Now, to answer your question:
Apple will never have a supercomputer in the Top500 list because they don't have any High Performance/Massively Parallel operating system, and most likely never will.

Now, my question to you: Why does it bug you so much that there is a Microsoft computer in the Top500 list? Why is this relevant to you? The researchers in Shanghai that use that computer need to use Windows HPC, besides, having 0.2% of the top500 share is not much to brag about.

*shrug*

The phrase that comes to mind is "The exception that proves the rule."
