First off, i tried searching for this problem and was unable to get any hits specific to my problem. :S
Back story
Windows crashed pretty hard, lost pretty much my whole os but kept files. I found an old ubuntu live start up disc put it in, and now i have 10.04.

The problem: every time i try installing the appropriate driver from the website (geforce gtx 460m) i get the message saying that I "appear to be running an X server; Please exit X before installing"

Trying it from root ends up with me getting these fancy words...

root [2] root /home/mike/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-290.10.run
