Hello,

I am reasonably new to using Ubuntu for office tasks but have used it at home for quite some time.

My question is how would i make a catalog for the company i work for in Ubuntu ?

i have seen Scribus but i'm not sure this is the best program available for the task.

Looking forward from hearing back

Thanks

Simon

Ubuntu is just the operating system. How would you do this at work? What tools/applications are available to you at work. If you will do this task at work what OS is on your work machine?

I think that these questions are important because the document that you produce has to be compatible with the computer systems that it will be put on.

Is it intended for the catalogue to be printed? Or only accessed by computer? Will there be images/photographs in the catalogue?

You could do all this with a word processor application. Then you have the choice of distributing the catalogue as a word processor document or as a PDF document. There is an advantage of PDF in that it can be read on any OS as well as be printed.

You could use a PDF Creator program but then you may be tempted to make the layout more complicated and then the PDF document may be incompatible with older PDF viewers.

You will find it more convenient to make the catalogue up as separate sections that can be individually edited and then made up as one large document.

Just some thoughts based on my experience.

One final thought. In my experience people who work at a company's head office may have the latest computers and they produce documents that look fine on these latest computers. But elsewhere in the company the computers are older and the documents are incompatible with the older hardware that does not have fast processors or fast graphic cards. Keep it simple and build for the oldest hardware in use in the company.

Regards.
