Sound doesn't work after upgrade?

I've recently upgraded my Ubuntu to 11.10, and now my computers internal speakers do not work. I have tried a number of fixes, none of them working. I can confirm that it isn't a hardware issue, as I have windows 7 and Ubuntu dual-booted together on a machine.

I connected some earbuds, and they work just fine, but I cannot get the sound to work in another way. Wiping clean and reinstalling is not my first choice, so what other options might I have?

Please post your specs, so we can help you. Even if it isn't a hardware issue, it could be an issue of the software interfacing with your hardware.
